The CG Corporate Cup: A Football Tournament to Remember

In what can only be described as a display of passion, pride, and an occasional disregard for personal safety, our inaugural 5-a-side football tournament kicked off, booted, and slid its way to raising just over £3,000 (and probably a few bruised egos!).

The Beautiful Game… with a Side of Banter

What started as a friendly fundraiser quickly escalated into a no-holds-barred, shin-kicking spectacle. Whilst being seen by first aid having been asked why he chose to keep playing after gaining an injury in his first match, one player replied ashamedly:

“Cause I’m a bloke, it’s what we do.”

Inspirational. Not sure even Shakespeare could have crafted such retort.

Injuries & Insults

At one point, play came to a dramatic halt when a tackle left someone questioning their life choices. As teammates gathered round with deep concern and emotional support, one opponent was overheard asking:

“What’s he gonna do, rub it better?”

There was none of this attitude off the pitch, but each 10-minutes of game time led to a whole new side of the players being seen.

Tactics or Chaos? You Decide.

Let’s talk strategy – or lack thereof. With some  teams spending more time, well simply shouting TIME(!) and others pulling out fully rehersed manouvers, TIME! was often coupled with shouts of:

“They’re not rolling over are they?”
“We’re not clinical enough, are we?”

Commentary Gold

Subs for each team were enclosed in our MUGA cages and brought nothing but more comedy moments shouting ‘strategic moves’ or (TIME!) from their off the pitch position. One particular highlight came with:

“Hold Ste, just hold!” – we’re still unclear what or who Ste was meant to be holding, but we respected the urgency.

Another moment of brilliance came when a particularly feisty save from a goalie led to more balls than the just the match ball taking a hit with a sound that will haunt dreams and a commentary of:

“That sounded hollow.”
