Inspire, Chorley Youth Zone, has been working hard with a group of young people since summer 2018 to establish their very own Morris Dancing troupe.

Dubbed the ‘Inspire Morris Dancers’, the group collected their very own uniforms earlier this week and hope to put them to good use throughout 2019.

Morris Dancing originated in the UK as early as 1448 and has long been a respected tradition ever since, with the dance form taking prominence in a number of competitions and festivals throughout the North West each year.

In the future, the Inspire Morris Dancers hope to enter such competitions and the dance group leader and Youth Worker at Inspire, Megan Davies, hopes their troupe will be able to go all the way in competitions.

“Our fantastic little troupe is full of wonderfully talented young people with a real passion for Morris Dancing.

With a lot of hard work and dedication I truly believe this group can compete at the highest level – but we’re still looking for new members to join, as well as fundraising ideas to cover travel, entry costs and more.”

Currently, the troupe, made up of girls aged from 8-16, is still under development and they meet 3 times a week at Inspire Youth Zone to rehearse and choreograph their routines.

The group is accessible to all members of all abilities at the Youth Zone and equipment, dresses and pumps are readily available to borrow each session for all those who hope to jump in on the fun.

Those hoping to join the Inspire Morris Dancers troupe must be registered members at Inspire. Members are then split into two groups – Juniors aged 8-12 and Seniors aged 12-19 and up to 25 with additional needs.

Once registered, members are able to then attend the Morris Dance sessions on Tuesdays 6.30pm-7.30pm (Juniors), Wednesdays 7pm-9pm (Seniors) and Fridays 4pm-5.30pm (Seniors).

“The Morris Dancers are like a little family at Inspire” one young member said, “we’re so excited to come every week and we can’t wait to start raising money to help us along the way!”

With plans to pack bags at a local supermarket as well as a to hold an internal bake sale, the dance troupe are looking to raise money in any way possible to help fund the start of their journey and their continued adventure.

If you’d like to get involved in the Inspire Morris Dancers, you can register as a Youth Zone member here or if you’d like to get involved in fundraising for the troupe, you can email sara.eltman@inspireyouthzone.org to register your fundraising idea.
